“Lunch is ready, Miss Yokohama,” said the villa staff at my door.
I thanked her and followed her to the dining hall at the ground floor.
Brandon was waiting for me at the table.
“Did you have a good nap?” he asked me in a neutral tone.
I nodded and sat on the chair pulled out for me by another staff. Three people were serving us. Once everything was in place on the table, Brandon politely asked them to leave us.
“Eat,” he said simply.
There was a tropical bounty laid before us. It brought back old memories.
I didn’t know what came over me but I did something silly. “Let’s say our graces first.” And I started saying an old prayer I used to recite during our many meals together in my childhood.
“Amen,” he said with me at the end. I saw him swallow uncomfortably. “You still remember that?”
“Of course. I’ve never forgotten anything you taught me.” I didn’t know why I said that. I shouldn’t have said that.
He evaded my eyes and started filling my plate with food.
I could’t help but smile as I watched him do this familiar gesture. It had been a long while since he last did this for me. I used to depend on him for such things which had earned me a lot of scolding from my folks but Brandon never minded. I had to admit, I missed being that spoiled little girl basking in his affection. I chastised myself right away. Silly thought
“Anything else you want?” He had put a little bit of everything on my plate.
“That would be fine for now. Thank you.”
He nodded and we started eating.
“Uhmm, this is tasty,” I said in appreciation.
“Uh-huh. It’s a mix of Thai, Vietnamese and Filipino cuisine.”
I smiled. “Delicious. This rice alone is a complete meal.”
He smiled back. “Asians have a complicated palate. They like mixing stuff and creating unique tastes. You wouldn’t believe the amount of spices they’d put in these.”
“Really? I’d like to learn how they cooked these.”
He shrugged. “The chef is Thai but speaks decent English. He can teach you.”
“Great!”
I found myself loosening up, warming up to his nearness again.
Yes, I can do this. Pretend we’re at least friends again. Even just for a few days.
“I love my room, by the way.”
“Hmm. Good.”
“It looks just like my room in LA,” I pointed out.
“Does it?”
I rolled my eyes. “You know it is. You had it decorated according to my taste.”
He shrugged. “Glad you like it.”
So, he really custom-made it for me, huh?
He poured me a glass of red wine. “By the way, your father called me a while back.”
“What did he say?”
“They’ll arrive tomorrow. They’re still in Bangladesh.”
“Oh, okay? What’s up there?” My folks were always busy with Equinox Foundation these days. They’d been traveling a lot.
“They’re looking for counterparts for a new project there. A school or a hospital.”
I found out I could really enjoy his company again if I didn’t dwell in the past.
I missed him.
Yeah, I did. It took a lot to admit that, too. Now
